SCCS opinions on methylisothiazolinone and cyclopentasiloxane
SCCS recently published some new opinions on ingredients used in cosmetic products (some we already wrote about, you can check one of our previous posts), so we would like to say a bit more about the SCCS opinion about two ingredients that various cosmetic companies are using quite frequently: methylisothiazolinone and cyclopentasiloxane.
SCCS’s opinon on the use of methylisothiazolinone is that this ingredient isn\’t safe in the concentrations in which it has been allowed till now. For leave-on hair products 0.01% concentration wasn\’t found safe, while for rinse-off products the recommended maximum concentration is lowered from 0.01% to 0.0015%.
Cyclopentasiloxane is safe for use in cosmetic products, except in body lotions and hair styling formulations and in products packaged in aerosols, pressurized sprays, sold in a form of powders etc. because they can give rise to lung exposure due to inhalation. Additionally, the recommended level of purity for cyclopentasiloxane is >99%.
