Labelling requirements for aerosols

Cosmetic products are usually packaged in various jars or tubes, but they can also be packaged in aerosol dispensers. Labelling rules for cosmetic products are described in the EU cosmetics regulation 1223/2009, while for aerosol dispensers there are also additional labelling rules, which are listed in the EU aerosol directive.

 

The following have to appear on the labels of the aerosol dispensers (for aerosol dispensers of 150ml or less the information may appear on an attached label):

 

A.      Any aerosol dispenser
1Name and address or trade mark of the person responsible for marketing the aerosol dispenser
2Symbol “3” (inverted epsilon) certifying conformity with the requirements of the Directive 75/324/EEC
3Code marking (Batch number)
4Nominal content by weight (not obligatory) and volume
5Obligatory marking: Pressurized container: protect from sunlight and do not expose to temperatures exceeding 50°C. Do not pierce or burn, even after use.
6Any additional operating precautions which alert consumers to the specific dangers of the product*
7Nominal total capacity of the container (Directive 2007/45/EC). Usually it is shown by a number without unit in a square box

 

B.      “Flammable” or “extremely flammable” aerosol dispensers
1Flame symbol
2If aerosol was classified as flammable à indication “flammable” on the label
If aerosol was classified as extremely flammable à indication “extremely flammable” on the label
3Warning 1: Do not spray on a naked flame or any incandescent material
Warning 2: Keep out of the reach of children
Warning 3: Keep away from sources of ignition – No smoking.

 

C.      Aerosol dispensers containing flammable components but not considered “flammable” or “extremely flammable”
1Quantity of the flammable material(s) in the following from: “X% by mass of the contents are flammable”

 

Additional acknowledgment:

Member States may make the marketing of aerosol dispensers in their territory conditional on the use of their national language for the wording on the label.
